Are you new to Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) or looking to boost your safety skills? Our SUP Safer course is perfect for beginners and novices who want to enjoy paddleboarding with confidence in a sheltered water environment.
What You’ll Learn
Our course is built on the British Canoeing Awarding Body Educational Philosophy, focusing on supporting the paddler. You’ll learn to:
- Choose the right equipment for your paddleboarding adventures.
- Understand the environment and weather conditions to stay safe.
- Plan your paddleboarding trips effectively.
- Stay safe on the water with practical tips and solutions.
Course Details
- Duration: Approximately 4 hours, including a 30-minute break for tea/coffee.
- Location: Sheltered water environment
- Modules:
- SUP Equipment: Get to know your gear.
- Environment and Weather: Learn to read the conditions.
- Planning: Prepare for your paddleboarding trips.
- Safety on the Water: Practical safety tips.
Certification
Upon completion, you’ll receive an attendance certificate from your Delivery Centre, recommended by our course provider.

Then the SUP Safer course at Tees Barrage International White Water Centre is for you! Your course will support you to consider safe practices, explore and learn to appreciate the potential hazards you might encounter, and be prepared to avoid or deal with them.
Why Take the SUP Safer Course?
This award is all about keeping safe on your SUP in sheltered water environments. Whether you are paddling with friends or your club, this practical course is packed with safe solutions. The course is structured to support you and ensure you have plenty of time practicing, as well as understanding how to develop skills and experience after the course.
The course takes around 4 hours and will cover 4 modules:
- SUP Equipment
- Environment and Weather
- Planning
- Safety on the Water
You’ll have opportunities to develop and progress your rescue skills and meet like-minded people. Many of our course candidates develop long-lasting friendships and connections. This course is open to anyone 10 years and older.
Course Content
This is a practical training course with no assessment. You’ll learn to keep yourself and others safe on the water, providing you with tools and concepts to solve common issues.

Things to Do Ahead of the Booking
Please complete the following medical consent form ahead of the booking:

(You will need to confirm your email address upon completion of these forms).
What You Need to Bring
- Equipment: Intro to SUP
- Towel
- Toiletries + Medication
- Solid (closed toe) footwear suitable for getting wet (e.g., old trainers)
- Swimsuit/Swim shorts
- Warm change of clothing for after the session
- 20p for a locker
- You will be given a wetsuit and all protective equipment needed for the session except for a pair of shoes listed above
- SUP board and kit you want to bring (boards can be supplied if needed)
