W.I. Making Waves

Elm Tree and Fairfield Women’s Institute are changing perceptions of the type of activities that members of the WI engage in. Eight ladies aged between 60-80 years of age donned helmets and wetsuits to try their hand at flatwater kayaking at Tees Barrage international White-Water Centre.

Under the guidance of instructor Tom Rogers, the ladies were given instructions on the fundamentals of kayaking and were unleashed on the water. The ladies approached the activity with energy and good humour and were making friends and family especially their grandchildren proud of their exploits.

Christine Bell from Elm Tree and Fairfield WI who organised the session with Tees Active said “Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and had a great time and had quite a few laughs. We are always looking for new challenges for our members and kayaking definitely ticked the box.”

Allan McDermott Tees Actives Community Engagement Manager added “The ladies from Elm Tree and Fairfield WI are proof that Kayaking is for everyone and their sense of adventure is an inspiration to everyone to get out there and challenge themselves.”
