The 300 metre long White Water Rafting and Kayaking Course was reconfigured in 2010 with new eddies, a slalom gate system and is now twice the depth of the previous course which is ideal for pulling those moves. All of the old features remain, but they are bigger and better than ever before!
The 95 metre Diamond course (one of the steepest in the UK) has a drop of 3.7 metres from top to bottom which makes this a great addition to the venue. Fully capable of taking up to 14 cumecs (possibly more); this short course is not for the faint hearted! This is an ideal finale to a Water Rafting experience, or for those paddlers who want more of a challenge in a controlled environment.
Both courses are set up with the new Rapidblocs™ system, which are also used at the Olympic venue in Lee Valley. The blocks allow for the creation of any shape, at any angle, at any point within the channel system enabling greater flexibility in set up and discipline specifications. Eddies can be created above the feature or below the feature or simply removed from the area altogether. This system truly gives the course operator a fully adjustable course that can be tuned, remodeled or updated at any time.
A major investment in the project is the inclusion of four massive Archimedes screws weighing a whopping 30 tonnes apiece, which enable 24 hour operation when required. Prior to upgrade the course was run on the natural flow of the River Tees when tidal levels below the barrage allowed. This is still perfectly operable but with the addition of the screws, users can visit for the whole day with a greater level of flexibility. The screws can also generate electricity when used in reverse which is returned back to the national grid.
The Lazyboy conveyor system transports users from the end of the course back up to the start without the need to even exit your boat (provided you can stay in!). This enhances the experience for users and improves disabled paddlers participation.
The iconic main centre building underwent a major refit which updated all internal facilities to cope with the demands of an internationally recognised venue. From refurbished changing rooms to a watersports shop and cafe, this building is an exciting hub for everyone visiting the centre.
A major investment was the retail outlet – NorthShore Watersports – which operates from the centre and online. NorthShore provides all of your equipment needs whether it be watersports or general outdoor gear. It stocks all of the major watersports brands and latest products, and is an authorised demo centre.
