Tees Barrage International White Water Centre is one of the UK’s leading outdoor activity centres offering an assortment of engaging activities to inspire creativity and promote personal growth and breakthroughs in learning back in the classroom.
Stationed peacefully on the northern bank of the River Tees we are ideally situated on the fringe of both Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees and are conveniently located just off the A19 and A66. Our experienced team have participated and taught outdoor pursuits extensively in the UK and around the world and provide groups with a safe and fun learning environment outside the classroom where teaching staff can be sure that they are fully supported in delivering and achieving the desired outcomes for their group.
All risk assessments and operating procedures are annually inspected and amended as necessary. We work with schools and education groups who may have limited time and resources to take the hassle out of organising. You can rest assured that watersports is our business: and watersports is what we do best!
Combining the excitement of water based activities alongside tried and tested teaching methods, we guarantee a rewarding and fulfilling experience. The centre is fully accredited by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA) which ensures that activity providers follow good safety management practices and allows young people to experience exciting and stimulating activities outdoors without being exposed to avoidable risks, as well as the British Canoe Union (BCU) and the Royal Yachting Association (RYA). Each team member has an enhanced DBS Disclosure and the centre is annually inspected by the relevant governing bodies to check that the centre is operating within the guidelines and remits of its licence.
We are open daily with all activities available throughout the year. The peak season here is March to October which may be more suited to those swayed by the elements! We offer teachers and education providers the opportunity to come along and visit the site where we will give you a tour of the facility and discuss your requirements. To arrange a visit please contact the centre directly on 01642 678000 or fill out an enquiry form.
Below you will find everything you need from a slideshow of activities to FAQ’s and important documents.
Our paddlesport sessions involve an introduction to the equipment and technique needed to get started, before building up to explore more of the water. Students will enjoy a variety of fun and interactive games on the water which will add a whole new dimension to the word play time!
Bellboating emphasises planning, communication, leadership and teamwork skills and is great fun for large groups. Bellboating regattas can add a competitive teamwork element as well as the perfect opportunity to explore the river. Bellboats are very stable crafts making them perfect for groups of mixed abilities.
Our high ropes sessions include a number of interactive games such as the blindfold challenge to promote communication skills as students tackle wobbly rope bridges and swinging stepping stones! Students often leave with a real sense of achievement and our highly trained staff are on hand to support those who might need more encouragement than others. Not many can say they have conquered the UK's biggest!
Our guided tours investigate all aspects of the environment around us including the natural habitat of the river and its wildlife as well as the engineering innovations of the Tees Barrage. Each session has hands on games and interactive tasks to keep students curious and focused on learning.
Our team building games are always a favourite with groups! Sessions are designed to look at a team rather than the individual and are an excellent way for students to focus on teamwork, leadership and communication through problem solving. This is an ideal activity for children who may have issues with confidence and being able to express themselves.
These sessions are all about getting involved and having huge amounts of fun. Students will fall in, they will get wet and they will laugh like crazy while doing so! Smaller group sizes allow sessions and learning outcomes to be tailored to each group and will emphasise communication skills, patience and encouragement of peers.
Our highly trained instructors will demonstrate the basics before turning up the heat and taking the group down the white water course and tackling the rapids and drops. Intensity levels can be tailored to each group, as students work as a team to successfully navigate the full length of the course. These sessions are suited to older students and will guarantee big smiles and memorable moments that will last forever.
